Privacy Policy
Short version: MemStash collects no data. The app has no internet access, so nothing you do in it can leave your phone through MemStash. There are no ads, no analytics, no crash reporting and no account.
Who makes MemStash
MemStash is made by Paweł Duraj, an independent developer. It is open source: its code is public on GitHub, so anyone can check what this policy describes. This policy covers MemStash for Android wherever you install it from, including Google Play. Questions about privacy go to [email protected].
What the app uses, and where it stays
Everything below happens only on your device.
- Your meme folder. You choose one folder with Android's folder picker. MemStash can read and
change files only in that folder and its subfolders: it lists your memes and adds, renames, moves or deletes
memes and folders when you ask it to. If you turn on hiding memes from the gallery, it adds a
.nomediafile to the folder, which tells galleries and photo pickers to skip it. MemStash cannot see your other files and needs no storage permission. - Memes you add. Images you share to MemStash, choose in Android's photo picker or paste are saved to your meme folder.
- Clipboard. When MemStash comes on screen, it checks whether the clipboard holds an image copied in another app. If it does, MemStash reads the image's name and first few bytes once, to check that it can add it as a meme, and offers to add it. Android may show a notice that MemStash accessed the clipboard. The image is saved to your meme folder only when you tap to add it. When you send a meme by clipboard, MemStash puts a copy of it on the clipboard and keeps the last five such copies in its private cache, so the chat app can still paste them.
- Gallery copies. When you send a meme through the gallery, MemStash saves a copy named
memstash.jpg(or.png,.gifand so on) inPictures/MemStash, so the chat app shows it first among your photos and the meme's own file name isn't sent along. Each copy replaces the previous one and is deleted automatically, after 3 minutes by default. In the settings you can choose from 1 to 10 minutes or deletion when MemStash next opens, or delete the copies right away. - What a sent meme contains. Both kinds of copy are your meme file unchanged, including any metadata stored in it. If a meme is a camera photo, that can be the date it was taken and, if the camera saved it, the place. Whether that metadata reaches the people you send the meme to depends on the chat app.
- Settings, history and the meme list. MemStash stores its settings, such as the chosen folder and display options; the time each meme was last sent (for up to 300 memes), which it uses for the Recent list and to order search results and folders; and a list of the memes in your folder (file names, folders, formats, dates and image proportions), so it opens quickly. All of this stays in the app's private storage. You can clear the history in the settings at any time.
What is shared, and with whom
Nothing, with no one. MemStash does not request Android's internet permission and contains no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting libraries. I do not receive, sell or share any data about you. A meme goes only where you send it, and the chat app you send it to handles it under its own privacy policy.
Permissions
MemStash asks for no permissions you have to approve. Its only permissions come with WorkManager, Android's library for background tasks, which MemStash uses to delete gallery copies on time, also after the phone restarts: run at startup, keep the phone awake for a moment and view the network state. MemStash doesn't use the network state, and without the internet permission it can't connect anywhere.
Backups
MemStash opts out of Android backup and of transfer to a new phone, so its settings, history and meme list are not copied to your Google account or anywhere else. MemStash doesn't back up your memes either. They are ordinary files in your folder, backed up only if you back up that folder yourself, for example by keeping it in a cloud folder. If your gallery app backs up all albums, it may back up a gallery copy before MemStash deletes it; you can turn off the backup of the MemStash album in the gallery app.
Google Play
If you install MemStash from Google Play, Google handles the download and may collect information under the Google Privacy Policy. Google gives developers aggregate statistics, such as install counts, and crash reports with technical details such as the device model and Android version, from users who chose to share diagnostic data with Google.
Keeping and deleting data
I do not store any of your data, so there is nothing to request or delete on my side. In MemStash's settings you
can clear the copy history, delete gallery copies and disconnect the meme folder, which ends MemStash's access to
it. Clearing MemStash's storage in Android settings or uninstalling the app removes its settings, history, meme
list and cached copies. A gallery copy made shortly before uninstalling stays in Pictures/MemStash,
and Android doesn't let a reinstalled MemStash delete it; you can delete it in your gallery like any other photo.
Your meme folder stays, because it holds your own files.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of MemStash handles data differently, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date at the top will change.
